COMMUNITY - PRODUCE - SHARE

Who Are We?

GROW Scarborough is a volunteer Community Group that exists to bring individuals, families and our communities closer together through growing and sharing food and skills in a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable way.

What We Do

We believe strong communities start with access to good food, shared knowledge, and a sustainable environment. Through our first project at The Street Community Garden and our Coastal Seed Hubs in Scarborough, Filey and Whitby public libraries, we’re helping people grow their own food, reduce waste, and build resilience across the local community.

Why We Do It

By sharing seeds, skills and fresh produce, we’re growing a future where everyone has access to sustainable, nutritious, locally grown food. From planting for pollinators to reducing reliance on complex supply chains, every small action adds up to something meaningful. We believe food growing has the power to bring people together, nurturing both our community and the planet right here in Scarborough. Whether you’re an experienced grower or just getting started, there’s a place for you.
Come and grow with us.

Help us to help the community! Come and grow with us.

Why All This Matters

When we grow food locally, we can:
Build climate resilience - locally grown food adapts to regional weather patterns, reducing carbon footprints, environmental impact and water usage.
Reduce waste and pollution - shorter supply chains mean less packaging, food miles and spoilage
Increase biodiversity and improve soil health - growing locally supports ecosystems and sustainable land use.
Revitalise local economies - keeping food production local supports businesses and keeps money in the community.
Promote self-sufficiency and empowerment - giving people the skills and resources to grow their own food builds lasting independence.
We can improve health and wellbeing - Growing food outdoors has well-documented benefits for mental health, helping to reduce anxiety, depression and stress. Locally grown food also means better access to fresh, nutritious produce - encouraging healthier eating habits for the whole community.
We can strengthen community bonds - Growing food together gives people a shared purpose, bringing them closer through collaboration and cooperation. It reconnects us with nature and with each other - rebuilding a sense of community spirit through the simple act of sharing resources, knowledge and labour.

We can create innovation

If every person or family grew even a small amount of their own food, the cumulative effect could be transformative. Locally grown food initiatives have the power to spark new thinking - driving innovation in urban agriculture and inspiring new models of community governance.
